Still undecided about where to start your Lunar New Year feasting? Take a look at this guide to Chinese delicacies, which is sure to make your gatherings memorable.
Pak Loh Chiu Chow is offering a choice of three 10-course menus until February 9 (from HK$3,280 for six). All feature traditional favorites, headlined by the famed soyed goose meat platter. The restaurant also offers crispy noodle rolls stuffed with fat choy, celery and shrimp – a new year must-have as it sounds similar to “wish to be prosperous.”
“Chiu Chow cuisine is very conscious about sauce pairings,” said executive chef Hui Mei-tak. “We serve sweet sauces and brined leek dipping water with crispy noodle rolls to balance the heat.”
Another top dish is Chiu Chow yam, ginkgo and glutinous rice dumpling soup, where the ginkgo is marinated in orange peel water. The seasonal yam, also known as the ginger potato, is carefully sliced with a special cutter. “The edge of the special cutter is blunt. It will not damage the fiber so the yam will be crispy,” said Hui.
Apart from the menus, Hui also recommended the double-boiled bird’s nest with pureed chicken and mushroom (HK$300 a head). Orders must be made two days in advance.
Classic yet contemporary Lunar New Year dishes can be found at Mott 32 in Central, available from tomorrow to February 11.
The braised sea cucumber (HK$1,680) with lotus seed, lily, dried shrimp, pearl barley, Yunnan ham and mushroom symbolizes endless fortune and prosperity.
Among the eight new delicacies are the whole Atlantic lobster salad (HK$1,088), steamed fillet of leopard coral garoupa (HK$1,680) and crabmeat e-fu noodles (HK$288).
In saying goodbye to the Year of the Pig, the Salted Pig’s Whole Suckling Pig Family Feast (HK$300 a head) is a creative and fun choice.
Featuring pig’s cheek and knuckle interpreted through a salad, mains and snacks, as well as a whole roasted suckling pig, the menu also has a seafood risotto and a dessert platter and is available for dining-in or delivery with three-day advanced booking.
The menu is available across all branches until February 2.
If you are planning to enjoy dim sum with relatives, John Anthony in Causeway Bay has added three new items to its a la carte menu. Two Instagram-worthy new delicacies are the steamed prawn dumplings with Korean yuzu (HK$68), which look like small tangerines and symbolize fortune, as well as the steamed beetroot rice rolls, crispy prawn and crab meat (HK$138), which are inspired by Chinese firecrackers.
Yellow croaker dumplings with crab roe (HK$68) and yuzu-shaped dumplings are also new additions to its 11-course Lunar New Year set dinner (HK$688), which also features new dishes alongside signature favorites. The dinner is available until February 8.
Yum Cha is perfect for smaller groups of dim sum seekers. The mini smoked salmon prosperity toss (HK$168) is full of meticulously placed vegetables and crispy toppings like fried taro, fried wonton skin, sliced lotus root and ground peanuts.
Another traditional dish is the mini poon choi (HK$238), containing a host of ingredients including fish maw, abalone, sea cucumber, pigeon meat, fresh mushroom, lotus root, radish, beancurd skin and broccoli.
Some fun choices are included among the seven new items, such as the deep-fried sticky dumplings with minced pork and shrimp (HK$38) shaped like gold ingots and the salted egg yolk layered cake (HK$38), which is crafted into miniature mahjong tiles. The festive dishes are available at all branches until February 3.
If you want to gather with friends but are tired of big meals, The Cakery is offering a limited-time afternoon tea set with traditional food symbolising good fortune (HK$488 for two) until February 8.
Being vegan, the set is sure to please includes omni pork dumpling, omni pork lotus root cake and turnip cake, while sweet treats include red sugar sweet rice cake, mini cupcake, mango chia pudding, mandarin citrus tart and mandarin mantou.
